"I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." I Corinthians 15:50-54
Many of the representations of Heaven are so lame! Heaven is often portrayed as disembodied spirits and angels floating in the clouds playing harps. That might be slightly better than hell, but excuse me for not getting real excited about that!
Paul is out to quickly dismiss that notion! He affirms to the believers in Corinth that they will, indeed, have bodies in Heaven. They will not be flesh and blood bodies but they will be new and improved and eternal! These bodies will be especially fitted for the perfect environment that is Heaven!
It may be a good time to clarify that when you die and go to Heaven you will NOT become an angel! God created them a long time ago and they were judged when Lucifer rebelled in the presence of God and he was casted out of Heaven along with 1/3 of the angels who conspired with him. So, the angels who remained faithful spend their time (actually eternity) between Heaven and earth serving God and ministering to you and me (the saints of God)!
You were created to be you and you will be you forever! From the moment you were conceived and God knit you together in the womb, He designed you to be a wonderful unique gift to His plan on earth and then His eternal Kingdom! He celebrates your uniqueness and will preserve it forever by giving you a special glorified body to replace the special earthly body He gave you! During your lifetime of living, loving and serving with Him He has been perfecting you through His Word and His Spirit so you will die a better you than you were when you were born. But following the Second Coming and the Great Resurrection, you will be united with a new and significantly improved body that you will enjoy eternally!
I guess the best previews we have of this eternal body is Jesus after He resurrected and appeared to the disciples over a period of 40 days. People recognized Him so He must have looked very similar to His earthly form. He still bore the scars of His suffering and they were able to touch Him and feel a person. Yet, He was able to appear and disappear in a locked room! How cool is that!?
The other preview I can think of was when the inner circle accompanied Jesus up on the mountain where He was transfigured and Moses and Elijah appeared there. Both of those great men were visible and recognizable. I am not exactly sure how they recognized them since they had never seen them before but I must assume that Jesus introduced them!
Imagine that! "Peter, this is Moses. Moses, I want you to meet Peter!" That's what I'm talking about !!!!!
Heaven is a perfect paradise that will be enjoyed by perfect people who have been redeemed and sancitified and glorified by the grace and power of Jesus Christ! It will be like Eden except eternal. If you want a good visual of Heaven, read about Eden in Genesis. That was the original paradise and Jesus, the Second Adam, came to restore paradise, so why would He change it? When you die in Christ you will go to a real place and eventually become a real person and have a real good time FOREVER - (as in, without end) - and EVER and EVER!
You can work all you want to improve your body. That is a good thing! But thanks to the power and grace of Jesus you WILL someone enjoy a perfect body!

"Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." I Corinthians 15:58
When it comes to our faith, everything hinges on the resurrection of Jesus!
The resurrection is the "therefore" in this verse. Because the resurrection is a fact and Jesus did rise from the dead, then all of God's other claims and promises are true as well! ALL OF THEM!
Life matters! Life matters more when you live it for God! Life continues after death when Jesus lives in you!
Since life matters then what you do (or don't do) with your life matters! What you do in this life with and for Jesus has eternal significance! Everything you will enjoy in the next life is infuenced by what you do in this one! Your resurrection depends on His. Since His happened yours will, too! How encouraging is that!?
If the resurrection were not true that would not be true - but it is!
What you do matters even when it doesn't seem to matter. Everything you do either adds or detracts from eternity - your eternity and eternity for others! So, make today count! Keep obeying God and honoring Him! Keep loving others and serving them. Don't life for results or affirmation, live knowing that every right thing you do is recorded in heaven and great will be your reward!
Paul sent this reminder to encourage us! He, of all people, understood how discouraging it can be to serve God and to serve people. God is invisible and people can be ungrateful and life can seem pointless. But look to the resurrection! When Jesus looked defeated and faith looked its darkness, victory was accomplished!
Take encouragement today! Do the hard thing - the right thing - the faith thing!
Today I want to especially send this encouragement to my beautiful daughter who is celebrating her 34th birthday today in the face of some overwhelming struggles. Sis, you know it pays to do the right thing! Payday is sometimes delayed, but God is faithful to those who remain faithful!

"How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body." I Corinthians 15:36-38
You have heard all the good news, bad news jokes. There are some good ones.
For humor to be funny it must contain an element of truth and life IS a good news/bad news proposition. You are fully aware of that!
In this portion of Scripture Paul assures us that we who are the redeemed will receive eternal bodies with which to enjoy the eternal paradise that is Heaven. The bad news is we will have to die to get it!
According to Paul's analogy, the seeds of your new and eternal body are resident in your current body!
So, care for your temporary body. Nurture it. Regard it as sacred because it is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Surrender your body as a living sacrifice that God can use for His glory.
But no matter how well you care for it and maintain it, some day death with rip your spirit out of your body and it will be buried or burned. No matter how your body is disposed of, it will be resurrected and renewed when Jesus returns!
God cares about you as a whole person, emotions, mind, spirit and body. And when Jesus offered Himself as the atoning sacrifice for your sins, He redeemed your whole person! The death of Jesus conquered sin and His resurrection destroyed the power of death! His Holy Spirit ministers comfort, truth and health to your mind and spirit!
So, for believers, there is good news and better news! Death will usher you into the immediate presence of God and the temporary separation from your body will result in the reception of a perfect and eternal body!
Live life carefully and prayerful and joyfully! Love God completely and love others passionately knowing that His eternal life and love at work in you and your future is bright!

"But someone may ask, "How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?" I Corinthians 15:35
You and I were never intended to die. Death was not a part of God's perfect plan. Being a forever God, He wanted us to have forever fellowship with Him in the forever perfect place He created. If you want a glimpse of God's "plan A" look at the first several chapters of Genesis. Death is God's enemy. He had to conquer it. How did He conquer it? By sending His Son, Jesus to die and then to arise from the dead!
One day He will totally destroy death. The Bible promises that "death and hell will be thrown into the Lake of Fire.
Isn't it good to know that we serve a God Who is not only bigger than life, He is bigger than death! He will restore order and holiness and perfection to His universe!
To get an insight on the resurrection and the "ever after" bodies we will have we can look to Jesus. After His death He resurrected on the third day and for several weeks He appeared to His disciples. Obviously, they recognized Him and yet he appeared in rooms that had locked doors. So, we learn that our forever bodies will be recognizable!
That is good news! It is comforting news!
Your forever body will be as good and perfect as the rest of your forever!

“HAPPILY EVER AFTER?”

Week Four – “Hot And Bothered” Luke 16:22-31

One way we seem to deal with topics we find uncomfortable is to jokes about them or draw cartoons. Joking about your eternal destiny is not what I mean when I talk about living “Happily Ever After”.

I. Hell Is A Place Of Misery, Vv. 23-24
“And being in torment in hell……”

Jesus specifically mentioned the word “hell” fifteen times and He wasn’t joking when He talked about it. It appears in the Bible many more times than that. Here are a few examples of references to hell’s torment and torture:

everlasting fire – Matthew 18:8, 25:41 - everlasting punishment - Matthew 25:46everlasting chains - Jude 1:6 - everlasting destruction - 2Thessalonians 1:9eternal damnation - Mark 3:29 - eternal judgment - Hebrews 6:2 - eternal fire - Jude 1:7 - unquenchable fire - Matthew 3:12 - the fire that never shall be quenched - Mark 9:43, 44, 45, 46, 48 - fire unquenchable - Luke 3:17 - shame and everlasting contempt - Daniel 12:2 - mist of darkness is reserved for ever - 2 Peter 2:17 - the blackness of darkness for ever - Jude 1:13

weeping (Matthew 8:12), wailing (Matthew 13:42), gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:50), darkness (Matthew 25:30), flames (Luke 16:24), burning (Isaiah 33:14), torments (Luke 16:23), everlasting punishment (Matthew 25:46)! Jesus says in Matthew 25:41, "Depart from me, ye cursed, into EVERLASTING FIRE, prepared for the devil and his angels."

Listen to how Bill Hybels described what Hell might feel like: (BAD DREAMS)
“The bottomless pit…conjures up dreamlike feelings of falling away -- falling, falling, falling. You’ve all had dreams like that; where when you woke your heart was beating because you were falling. Picture in your mind hanging over a precipice --- and God is hanging onto you --- and you’re hanging onto him.

“And you decide you don’t need him anymore. So you let go. But the moment you let go you know you made a mistake. You’re falling, and every moment you fall further and further away from the only source of help and truth and love --- and you realize you made a mistake and you can’t get back up --- and you fall further and faster and further and faster into spiritual oblivion --- and you know you’re going the wrong direction --- and you’d give anything to go back, but you can’t. And you fall, and you fall, and you fall, and you fall …
“How long? Forever. And all the while you’re falling you’re saying, ‘I’m further now; I’m further. I’m further from the only source of hope, truth, and love.’
“In hell there is never the bliss of annihilation. You’d give anything for annihilation, but it’s unavailable --- only the conscious continuation of emotional anguish, physical anguish, relational anguish, and spiritual anguish … forever.”

Dr. Maurice Rawlings is a cardiologist and professor of medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga, and his colleagues are constantly treating emergency patients, many of whom have had near-death experiences. A study of these cases by Dr. Rawlings was reported in Omni magazine. It is no longer unusual to hear about people who have almost died who speak of seeing a bright light, lush green meadows, rows of smiling relatives and experiencing a deep sense of peace. However, Dr. Rawlings gives additional information from his patients by interviewing them immediately following resuscitation while they are very much in touch with their experience.
Dr. Rawlings says that nearly fifty percent of the 300 people that he has interviewed have reported lakes of fire, devil-like figures and other sights reflecting the darkness of hell. Rawlings says that these people later change their story because they don’t want to admit where they’ve been, not even to their families. "Just listening to these patients has changed my whole life," claims Dr. Rawlings. "There is a life after death, and if I don’t know where I’m going, it’s not safe to die." Dr. Rawlings, a devout atheist, "considered all religion ’hocus-pocus’ and death nothing more than a painless extinction."
But something happened in the late ‘70’s that brought a dramatic change in the life of Dr. Rawlings! He was resuscitating a man, terrified and screaming. "Each time he regained heartbeat and respiration, the patient screamed, ’I am in hell!’ He was terrified and pleaded with me to help him. I was scared to death...Then I noticed a genuinely alarmed look on his face. He had a terrified look, worse than the expression seen in death! This patient had a grotesque grimace expressing sheer horror! His pupils were dilated, and he was perspiring and trembling--he looked as if his hair was ’on end.’ Then still another strange thing happened. He said, ’Don’t you understand? I am in hell...Don’t let me go back to hell!’...the man was serious, and it finally occurred to me that he was indeed in trouble. He was in a panic like I had never seen before."
Dr. Rawlings said no one who could have heard his screams and saw the look of terror on his face could doubt for a single minute that he was actually in a place called hell. He could be a disbeliever no more.

Having to face the reality of hell jolted him into seriously facing his own unbelief and began a spiritual search that led him to become a Christian.

Our Bible teaches us that Hell is a place of darkness. So you say, "Well, if Hell is a place of flame in the center of the earth, how can there be darkness?" Scientists have also figured that one out for us. As flame gets hotter, you have yellow flame, orange flame, then blue flame. Then beyond blue flame there is a green flame, and if gets much hotter than that, the flame becomes entirely clear and gives no color at all. So there is no light in Hell, because the flames are so hot they have no color and have no light. They are simply clear.

HELL IS A PLACE OF MISERY.

II. Hell Is A Place of Memory, V. 25
"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.”

REGRETS – Ever grieved over a lost opportunity? Imagine grieving forever…..
Ever made a bad decision and suffered the consequences of it? Imagine that forever.
REMORSE – Wishing you could undo what you’ve done and untangle your life.

Not only memories but cravings and addictions…… if he longed for water that much, imagine how much he would need a drink of alcohol or a drug fix……

HELL IS A PLACE OF MEMORIES

III. Hell Is A Place of Mourning, Vv. 27-31

Relationships

These verses confirm what we already know – relationships are what make life meaningful and worthwhile. Of all the horrors of hell – and they are considerable – the worst torture will result from relationships that have been interrupted forever.

Jeff Strite, a pastor in Indiana, tells this story about his Dad.
My Dad was what was known as "a rounder." He was a man’s man. He was a hard worker, hard fighter, and a hard player of baseball and basketball. He was attractive to women and he loved to go out and dance.
Now, it’s not that dad was a stranger to church (when he first met mom, he kissed her behind the furnace in a church basement). He wasn’t unfriendly to church, it’s just that God held little interest for him. He didn’t need God to run his life. After he married mom, they settled down as married couples did. Mom, a deeply religious woman, never failed to go to church, but Dad always had work to do. And - well, church wasn’t all that important anyway. But after awhile, mom’s church going got to bother him. He accepted the idea that he might go to hell, but the idea of being there without the woman he loved troubled him.Dad finally decided to force mom to avoid church. He asked her if she would feel comfortable in heaven if he were in hell.

Now, Mom was the quiet type of Christian who didn’t try to force her faith down dad’s throat, but now she had the opportunity to address his need. He waited to see how she would respond? She thought for a couple of moments and then asked him: "Lowell, would you really feel comfortable if I were in hell with you?" The simplicity of her response led Dad to change his way of thinking and he turned his life over to Jesus. Why? Because hell wasn’t a comfortable concept to him especially when it came to someone he loved.

LET’S FACE IT – ONE OF THE REASONS WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEAVEN IS TO BE WITH GOD AND WITH JESUS BUT ALSO TO BE WITH FAMILY & OTHERS WE LOVE. THE THOUGHT OF SPENDING ETERNITY SEPARATED FROM THOSE WE LOVE IS UNBEARABLE TO US! BUT THAT IS WHAT HELL IS!

REJECTION – Denied access to Heaven and separated from God forever and separated from ones you love. No one likes the feeling of being left out…..

RIDICULE – Imagine Satan in your face mocking you and laughing at your foolishness. If he accuses you and tries to condemn you now – how do you think he will be then?

HELL IS A PLACE OF MOURNING!

Gene and Paulette Cranick, of South Fulton, Tennessee, lost their home after officers were ordered by bosses not to extinguish it.

Fire fighters only arrived when the flames spread to the property of a neighbor, who had paid the fee. However, they continued to refuse to help the Cranicks.

Later the same day, the couple's 44-year-old son was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, after allegedly punching the local fire chief.

Jeff Vowell, the city manager of South Fulton, said: "It's a regrettable situation any time something like this happens." Mr Vowell explained that there was no county-wide fire service and it was too expensive for the city's officers to serve surrounding rural areas like the Cranicks' as well.

Rural residents can gain access to the service by paying the annual fee. But "if they choose not to," Mr Vowell said, "we can't make them".

Mr Cranick said: "I thought they'd come out and put it out, even if you hadn't paid your $75, but I was wrong." His wife said the couple had offered to pay the fire fighters whatever was necessary for them to extinguish the flames, but the officers refused.

However they do not blame the officers themselves, she said. "They're doing what they are told to do. It's not their fault." The Mayor of South Fulton, David Crocker, told local reporters: "We're very sorry their house burned."

However he too stood by the subscription policy, arguing that offering a pay-as-you-go service would mean upfront costs could not be met.

About three hours after the fire began, Mr. Cranick's son Timothy allegedly arrived at the South Fulton fire station demanding to see Mr. Wilds the fire chief.

It is alleged that when Mr. Wilds came forward and asked if he could help, Mr Cranick punched him. "He just cold-cocked him," Mr. Crocker reported.

Weird story isn’t it? You could say that it isn’t right and it isn’t fair, but it was the rule and it was understood and they ignored the rule. So, if they knew the rule and they ignored the rule and then the rule was enforced, whose fault was it that their house burned down?

In the same way, people say, “A loving God wouldn’t send people to Hell…….”

1) Anyone who goes to hell does so against the will of God…..

2) Anyone who goes to hell does so against the grace of God…..

HOW SHOULD I RESPOND TO THIS MESSAGE?

1) LIVE WITH ASSURANCE 2) LIVE WITH URGENCY

"This is why it says: "When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men." (What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)" Ephesians 4:8-10
Once more I want to address the often offered argument that "a loving God wouldn't send a person to hell."
Here's something to thing about. Jesus went to hell.
Anymore questions?
Don't you think that if God allowed His own Son to go to hell that you would be different?
When Jesus went to the cross He became the sacrifice for all of our sins - all of yours, all of mine and all of ours. He paid the penalty that that He didn't deserve to purchase the salvation that we couldn't afford. You will remember that when He assumed our sins on the cross the Father had to turn His back on His Son. That is when Christ cried out those painful words, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?"
Because Jesus died as a sinner He was condemned to Hell. Once the Atonement was completed the power of God delivered Him from the power of sin and death.
God is serious about Heaven and eternal life and salvation and hell. That is because He is serious about relationships. He created us to live in relationship with Him. His desire if for us to love Him and enjoy Him eternally. In order for that to happen He had to conquer the sin problem. Jesus did that. We must receive His provision by faith for the forgiveness of sins. Sin separates us from God just as it separated Jesus from the Father. If you die in that alienated condition you have no hope for eternity. You will spend eternity separated from Him. You will be forever alone, devoid of relationship with God or with anyone. Alone. Enveloped in total darkness. Tormented in agonizing fire.
If you go to hell it will be against the will of God and totally despite the grace of God. He has done everything He can to make it possible for you to live in relationship with Him and with all the redeemed saints of God for eternity! But you must avail yourself of His provision. You must confess your sin, repent, turn to Him by faith and walk in obedience all your days.
He conquered sin for you. He defeated death for you. He triumphed over hell. All you must do is believe Him and receive Him.
Should you refuse - well, you go to hell.

October 8, 2010

"And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'" Luke 16:26
The context of Luke 16, like all Scripture teaching is key to understanding. In this chapter Jesus is talking to His disciples about the importance of relationships over riches. Riches mean little if they don't result in rich relationships with God and those you love and live with.
There are those who argue that a "loving God would never send anyone to hell".
At least those people believe in hell. Not everyone does.
The truth is that God never has sent a human being to hell nor will He ever do so. Hell was created for the Devil and his legion of fallen angels. However, those who refuse to receive God's provision for salvation by accepting His Son, Jesus, will have no way of avoiding hell.
Peter tells us clearly that "God is not willing that any should perish but all come to repentence".
John wrote that "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."
Any person who winds up in hell will do so against the will of a loving God. But as C. S. Lewis once said, "Every person must decide if they will have faith in God and say, "Thy will be done." Any person who refuses to surrender to God's will and trust Him for salvation will come to the end of his days and at his last breath hear Jesus to him, "You did not want my will to be done so your will be done".
So, if God honors that man's will to refuse salvation through Christ and that refusal causes him to miss heaven, whose fault is it for ending up in hell? Surely it is not Christ's fault."
When you distill it all away, life is about relationships. Jesus commanded you to "love God with all your heard, and all your soul, and all you mind." and then He added, "Love your neighbor as yourself. Should you refuse to obey God in our relationships and live selfishly, when you come to end of your days, your eternity will be spent separated from God and completely alone. Hell is a horrible place of fire, and torment and darkness and pure evil. But the worst part of Hell is the fact that you will be cut off from all relationships. You will find yourself completely alone - eternally separated from God and isolated from other people forever! If you don't cherish the sacred and special realtionships in life you will lose them for eternity! Love the God who created you, the Jesus Who died for you and the people God gave you to share life with.
